Is my O’Day Day Sailer really an O’Day? About that Hull Id…

This is the most important resource you need to look at:

https://daysailer.org/Hull-Index

Why? Well, it tells you who manufactured your particular day sailer. Mine was sold to me as an O’Day Day Sailer 1 — it is even on the title that way. However, the Hull ID (HID) told a different story. It informed me that I had actually purchased a Rebel Spindrift Day Sailer 1. Is that good or bad?

Are all Day Sailers the same?

I was quite wrong in assuming that all Day Sailers are O’Day Day Sailers. There’s lots of history here and this is what I’ve been able to ascertain….

Alas, my O’Day DaySailer 1, is not an O’Day. It is a Spindrift Day Sailer 1, made by Rebel Industries. I could have known this at the time I purchased the boat, because O’Day did not actually make a Day Sailer 1 in 1985 — check it out on the Hull Index linked above.

How is it that my title says O’Day? My best guess is that the boat was untitled, perhaps for a long time. At some point, someone went to the work of applying for a title, but did not know (like me) that there was any other kind of Day Sailer. Hence, the application for title was submitted that way, and approved.
