Refinishing Marine Teak Trim – Surface Prep

Step 1: Using my Ryobi Cordless Random Orbital sander, I took down the peeling varnish as well as any other varnish as close to bare wood as possible.

This was the state of my teak brightwork
I used 120, 150 and 220 grit sanding disks.
I used StarBrite Teak Cleaner and Brightener after sanding
I am super skeptical about specialized cleaners (at high prices). Regardless, I decided to give it a shot and was very surprised at the richness it brought back to the color. The plank on the right side has been scrubbed, cleaned and rinsed using a kitchen scrubbing pad/sponge with StarBrite Teak Cleaner and Brightener. The plank on the left is the color before cleaning.

Here is how the final trim came out after all the sanding cleaning and prep. Next Up — See how the first coat of Cetol came out on the teak.
